When’s the last time you thanked a Vet? If it’s been a while, Veterans Day is the perfect day to do so. It’s the day to honor all who’ve served in the military, whether they went to war or not. As we focus on gratitude this month, there are many ways to show appreciation for the contributions of honorable Vets. Here are some ways you can support a Veteran on Veterans Day or any day.

How to Support a Veteran

Those who serve in the military work to uphold national security, but it’s not without sacrifice. Whether it’s time away from family or life-altering wounds, duty to country comes with a price. Therefore, it should also come with respect. It can be as simple as a word of thanks or as elaborate as a gala, but the message is the same: thank you.

  1. Send a personal message. If you know a veteran, or know where to reach them, pass along a heartfelt message. It could be a call, letter, or visit. Simply thanking them for their service can mean a lot.
  2. Pack a care package. There are programs that send essentials and notes to active duty service members and Veterans. If you happen to know one personally, you can also make sure they get some special treats.
  3. Educate yourself. Take some time to learn about Veterans’ issues and community contributions. Spread awareness by sharing what you learn.
  4. Listen. Vets have many stories. Some may not wish to rehash them, but others appreciate the opportunity to share their experiences. Listening can be a profound way to show respect and empathy.
  5. Volunteer at events. Will there be a Veterans Day parade or ceremony in your area? If not, why not start one? Attending these events not only supports Vets, but it also connects the community.
  6. Donate to Veteran organizations. There are many nonprofits dedicated to supporting Veterans in different ways. Any size donation can make a big difference.
  7. Fly the flag. The American flag is a classic symbol of what Veterans served to protect. Displaying the flag in a respectful way is a show of gratitude and remembrance.
  8. Support Veteran-Owned Businesses. After their time in the Military, many Veterans transition into entrepreneurship. Locate businesses in your area that are run or staffed by Vets and honor their post-service pursuits.

With so many ways to show Veterans support, a little love can really go a long way.
